How Artificial Intelligence Got Its Name
Artificial Intelligence is one of the most influential technologies of our time. Yet few people know how it received its name.
Many assume AI began with modern chatbots or large language models. In reality, its story starts in the summer of 1956, when a small group of researchers gathered at Dartmouth College in the United States to explore an ambitious scientific idea.
That meeting would permanently change the history of computing.
How Artificial Intelligence Got Its Name at the Dartmouth Workshop
The workshop was proposed by John McCarthy, together with Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon. (How Artificial Intelligence Got Its Name)
At the time, researchers used terms such as cybernetics and automata theory. McCarthy believed a new scientific discipline needed its own identity, so he introduced the term Artificial Intelligence.
The proposal received $7,500 in funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, making it one of the earliest formally funded AI research projects.
The researchers explored a bold question:
Could intelligence be described so precisely that a machine could simulate it?
That question still influences AI research today.
Why How Artificial Intelligence Got Its Name Still Matters Today
Although the Dartmouth Workshop defined the field, one of the earliest successful AI programs came from Allen Newell and Herbert Simon at the RAND Corporation.
Their Logic Theorist demonstrated that a computer could use symbolic reasoning to prove mathematical theorems, providing an early example of machine reasoning.
From those early ideas grew technologies such as:

Modern AI systems are built upon decades of research that trace their intellectual roots back to the Dartmouth Workshop of 1956.
