Prompt Engineering: How You Talk to AI Matters
Have you ever asked an AI a question and received a useless answer — then asked the same thing differently and suddenly got exactly what you needed?
That is not necessarily luck.
The difference can be how you ask.
This is the basic idea behind Prompt Engineering.
What Is Prompt Engineering?
A prompt is simply what you type or say to an AI.
Whenever you use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Claude, you are already writing prompts — even if you did not know the term.
The way you frame your instruction can affect how useful and relevant the response is.
Prompt Engineering Rule 1: Be Specific
Consider this prompt:
“Tell me about food.”
The request is vague. The AI does not know exactly what you want.
Now compare it with:
“Give me a healthy 5-minute breakfast recipe for a busy working mother.”
The second prompt gives the AI more information about the situation and the desired result.
The principle is simple:
Vague in, vague out.
Being specific helps communicate what you actually need.
Prompt Engineering Rule 2: State Your Goal
A task alone may not tell the AI what kind of result you want.
For example:
“Translate this.”
Compare that with:
“Translate this into simple Hindi that a 10-year-old can understand.”
The second instruction gives the AI a clearer goal.
That extra context can make the response more useful.
Give AI Context
When writing a prompt, consider telling the AI:
What you want
What your goal is
Who the result is for
Any important preferences or limitations
What format you want
You are not necessarily overexplaining.
You are giving the AI information that helps it understand your request.
Treat AI Like a Conversation, Not a Search Bar
One common mistake is treating AI like a search engine: type two words and expect a perfect result.
Compare:
“Plan a trip.”
with:
“Plan a 3-day budget trip to Jaipur for two people who love history and street food.”
The second prompt provides context, preferences and a clearer goal.
That changes the conversation.
